Our Settlement & Integration Program

Our Settlement and Integration Programs include temporary housing for women and children, primary health clinic, women’s programs, English classes and workshops.

Our unique service provisions model is partially funded by the Newcomer Settlement Program from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration.
Our Settlement Programs include:
Transitional Housing for Women and Children
Primary Health Clinic
Women’s Programs
Food Security Program
English Classes (ELL: English Language Learning)
Workshops

If you need help finding transitional housing, applying for Ontario Works or any other information, please contact us at 4374318451 or by email at info@africanamericanalliances.org. We are open from Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Primary Health Clinic

We understand that everyone deserves access to health care, regardless of their insurance and immigration status. Our team aim is to assist patients with their physical and mental health needs, and to help them navigate the social services and health system in order to transition to long-term care with a family physician in the community.

FCJ Refugee Centre identifies equity and culturally competent strategies and services as critical to improving and maintaining the health of vulnerable populations. The clinic focuses on illness prevention and health promotion.

Housing

One of the core services we provide is the transitional housing program for recently arrived women and their children. We welcome refugee women from all around  of the word. We provide temporary house to around 30 women and children. A transitional housing worker visits the houses to build community offering support in the areas they need: support with medical appointments and other vital settlement needs such as opening a bank account, language classes, etc.

We believe that the refugee experience is a continuum from the moment the refugee decides to leave their country until they become a Canadian citizen… We have developed an integrated model of services for all uprooted people, but offer temporary shelter only to women and children.

We offer temporary housing (up to one year) to women and children. During this time we offer the following initial settlement services to both the residents in our shelters and to others who come to our office:

Orientation. We help the women with a basic orientation to life in a new country, where to shop and how to use public transit, etc.

Legal Assistance. One of the first appointments they must make is with legal aid. We refer them to a good refugee lawyer who will represent them in their refugee case and prepare them for their refugee hearing.

Social Assistance. The next appointment is with OntarioWorks, to get social assistance for their basic needs and rental allowance, which they pay to us for their accommodation. They are eligible for social assistance as long as they are in school or other training full time.

Medicals. Medical appointment is necessary to apply for a work permit and a Social Insurance Number. This can take up to three months.
School. If the women do not speak English, they are enrolled in an English as a Second Language class for adults. If they have children, the children are enrolled in a school near them.

Women’s programs/Support Groups: On-going information-sharing on issues relevant to women adapting to a new culture.
In the past, International Cookbooks have been developed from the Community Kitchen Program: Cookbook 2007, Cook-Book 2008.

Women's Program

Support Group
On-going information-sharing on issues relevant to women adapting to a new culture.

Community Activities
Our community events (meetings, workshops, celebrations, etc) provide an avenue for sharing of ideas and experiences improving interaction through our residents.

Women's Enterpreneur Skills Workshop
Our women’s skill building and entrepreneur development workshops connect women with each other and developing business skills, using their cultural abilities and traditions.

International Cookbooks
The FCJ Community Kitchen was a group of immigrant and refugee women who got together once a month to cook and share healthy and nutritious meals from their country of origin. This program was a fantastic way for the women in our community to come together and prepare and enjoy a meal.

Food Security Program
Vulnerable populations experience high levels of food insecurity and multiple forms of malnutrition. We see this at an alarming rate with the people we support weekly through our Food Security program, especially older adults, women and children.

English Classes

Thanks to the contribution and support of volunteer English teachers, we are able to offer a structured and stable English Classes program (ELL: English Language Learning).

The program is online and free, and it’s aimed primarily at people in a situation of vulnerability.

The students need to register, using the form that will be displayed on this page whenever classes are available, and entering their name, email, which class they want to attend, and how long they have been living in Canada.
We offer two levels:

Beginner: Basic grammar and vocabulary
(This class is now full; new courses will be announced here)

Intermediate: Grammar practice and vocabulary building
(This class is now full; new courses will be announced here)

For the Beginner English Class we send to the students an email every week with the link and the material that we will use in the class.

This material includes basic grammar and vocabulary that they are interested in learning. We also include exercises that we do together in class, while reviewing all the material. The classes are through the Zoom platform.

For the Intermediate Level Conversation Group the students receive the link every week, also at Zoom platform. This leveel is for students who already know the basic grammar and vocabulary but they want to practice English and work on their confidence to express themselves in daily life.
