Youth Empowerment
What We Do
Youth Empowerment
The AAA Foundation Youth Network has shaped a positive and inclusive space to welcome migrant and refugee youth from around the world. The group works from a strong intersectional framework, and welcomes anyone regardless of their immigration status, gender identity, sexual identity, language ability, length of time in Canada, skin colour, country of origin, or any other aspect of their identity.
The AAA Foundation Youth Network strives to celebrate the resilience and potential of each of its members, and address the multiple barriers that impede their full and equitable participation in Canadian society. The group is open for migrant and refugee youth between the ages of 13 and 30 (and allies).
The Youth Network engages in a range of activities from skills-building workshops such as resume building and learning about mental health, to social activities and excursions, rallies, protests, or an annual summer trip to Canada’s Wonderland. We have also attended film screenings, and hosted garage sales and a number of craft sessions from knitting to painting! Each year, our sessions are planned and organised by the members themselves to build community, learn skills and grow with each other.

Understanding the Education System in Canada
Canada offers a strong and inclusive education system designed to support all children and young people, including those who are seeking refuge. Education is seen as a right, and schools aim to create safe, welcoming environments where students can learn, grow, and feel a sense of belonging.
Structure of the Education System
The Canadian education system is divided into three main levels:
1. Elementary (Primary) School
This usually includes Kindergarten to Grade 6 (ages 4–11). Children begin learning basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and social development.
2. Secondary (High) School
This typically covers Grades 7 to 12 (ages 12–18), depending on the province. Students continue their education with more advanced subjects and begin to explore future career or study options.
3. Postsecondary Education
After high school, students can choose to attend college, university, or technical institutes. These institutions offer professional training, diplomas, and degrees.
Right to Education for Refugee Claimants
In Canada, children and teenagers have the right to go to school regardless of their immigration status. This means that even if you are a refugee claimant, your children can attend public school for free.
Schools do not require proof of permanent residency or citizenship to enroll a child. Local school boards will guide families through the registration process and explain what documents may be needed (such as proof of address or age, if available).
